Waka Ama Nationals 2010, Karapiro Hamilton 21st Jan 24th Jan
We went to the nationals with the expectations to do the best that our team could do, we did not make it through to the finals or semis but now know how much we need to improve if we want to be in the finals, and will enjoy the challenge of training for this in future events. As our team name means Karawhiu give it a go, we will be out on the water soon paddling together giving it a go!!!
Our team name is Karawhiu, our team consist of 6 Māori wahine, from various iwi throughout nz. We paddle for Te Waka Pounmau, and the majority of us have paddled, at nationals, overseas and always support our club and regional events. 5 of us are mothers, so juggling paddling, whānau and mahi is a hard act to follow. We all love paddling, the most of us it is the first time back competing at National levels after having our tamariki, so it has been great getting back into exercise. We began training in Sept / Oct 2009 for the nationals, we won our regional events and club, however waka ama in the South is still an emerging sport for Women and there are very few women’s open teams to compete against.
